Nick Boulle Finishes Red-Flagged ROLEX 24 in 7th
Daytona Beach, FL— Nick Boulle and team survived error and flood to finish in seventh position at this year’s Rolex 24 At Daytona. Despite epic floods and quickly changing conditions, the team recovered in order to record its highest place finish in the twice-around-the-clock classic since its inception.
Team Principal, Patrick Lindsey, started the race and quickly set about moving up several places as he ran well within the top 10 for the first hour of the race. The car was then handed over to Boulle and later Porsche Young Professional, Matt Campbell, and Porsche Factory Driver, Patrick Long, for their first stints of the grueling endurance race. “This race is so competitive from the moment you get in for your first stint,” Boulle said. “The first time I got in the car it was immediately a sprint.”
Endurance Driver Boulle’s second stint in the car would be double-stint – referring to a two-hour run with two stops for fuel and tires rather than a single hour run in the car before a driver change. During this run from roughly 9PM to 11PM, the team saw Boulle take the lead of the race before eventually pitting to hand the car over to Campbell in second place. “When I got back in for my second stint, I was faced with class traffic as well as trying to maintain the lead. The car had great pace and the crew did a clean job in the pits. We’ve got a really great foundation to build on moving forward.”
Adversity struck for the first time here as the right rear wheel became dislodged as Campbell exited pit lane which led to the #73 Porsche GT3R losing several laps on the leaders. As the race continued, through strategy and pace the team of drivers and crew recovered to get the car back on the lead lap by the time the sun was coming up on Sunday morning! Boulle, Lindsey, Campbell and Long all felt positive as the race wound down despite red flags and uncharacteristically heavy rain.
Long and Campbell, spent the majority of their time in the car searching for any sign of grip on the track in the final hours of the race. A combination of oil and water sent multiple competitors off track, into walls and each other. Long barely escaped a multicar pileup, maneuvering the #73 through turns 10 and 11. Campbell steered clear of any on-track drama and made his way to the front of the field.
Boulle and Lindsey handled a majority of the driving Saturday and Saturday night. The race compiled 18 full-course cautions in total, nine of which Lindsey and Boulle endured over the course of their stint. Both drivers kept the #73 de Boulle Porsche clean and turning consistent lap times while fighting to earn laps back.
With two hours remaining and hours of hard work by the drivers and a sleepless night for the crew, the #73 Park Place Motorsports de Boulle Porsche 911 GT3R was leading the pack around the Daytona Road Course. As the rain began to fall more heavily, the team opted to in hopes of coming out ahead as the race wound down and go for the top step of the podium. However, just as the pit sequence began a red flag was thrown due to the flooded conditions of the race track. After waiting for two hours on an update from the officials on, it was determined that the 57th running of the Rolex 24 At Daytona would finish under red.
“It obviously is heartbreaking to pit from the lead and lose out on winning the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona, but it’s a big year and we just need to focus forward now.”
Boulles next race is at Sebring International Raceway for the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring presented by Advanced Auto Parts. “I’m looking forward to the 12 Hours of Sebring and seeing what we can do,” said Boulle. The weekend is part of a Super Sebring weekend featuring the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship and FIA World Endurance Championship. Lindsey will race in both the traditional 12-hour race Saturday, March 16, and the FIA 1,000 miles of Sebring Friday, March 15, with Project 1, both supported by Park Place Motorsports.
